Lithops

by Kids Discover

Native to southern Africa, lithops are called “living stones” or “pebble plants” because they look like rocks. Explorer William Burchell discovered them in 1811 after mistaking one for pebbles. Except for two thick leaves, they grow mostly underground to avoid predators and the sun.
