Jordan’s ancient city of Petra features buildings half-carved into rock, such as the iconic Al-Khazneh (or “Treasury”) seen here. Once a major trading city, it was “lost” for centuries, until Swiss author Johann Ludwig Burckhardt “found” it in 1812 (by convincing locals to reveal it).
