Nuke the Moon?

After the U.S.S.R. (now Russia) launched its Sputnik 1 satellite in 1957, the U.S. had a team of scientists, including a young Carl Sagan, explore exploding a nuclear bomb on the moon, as a way to impress the public. But officials decided a moon landing would make a more welcome impact.
