The Ocean in Winter

Winter in the Northern Hemisphere is affected in part by the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO), or shifts in the ocean’s pressure systems. For example, when subtropical highs are stronger and polar lows are deeper, winter is wetter on the East Coast of the U.S. and drier in Canada. (Graphic: climate.gov)
