Pests with a Purpose

Douglas-fir tussock moth caterpillars have four “tussocks,” or tufts, running along their backs. They consume fir needles so voraciously that they can strip and kill the trees. They can be pests but also serve a purpose, thinning out dense trees to keep forests healthy.
