In 1252, Norway’s King Haakon IV gave a polar bear to England’s King Henry III — who kept it in the Tower of London! Other exotic animals, such as leopards and a lion, also lived in the tower. But only the bear was allowed to fish in the River Thames, secured by a long chain.
