The Savior of Mothers

In the 1840s, Dr. Ignaz Semmelweis was called “the savior of mothers.” Though colleagues mocked his arguments for hand-washing between treating patients, the strict cleanliness rules at his Vienna maternity clinic led to many fewer women dying of infection after childbirth.
