Silbo Gomero: Where Whistling = Talking

Silbo gomero is a language made almost entirely of whistles! Used for centuries on La Gomera, one of Spain’s Canary Islands, it helped residents communicate over long distances. Silbo had mostly died out by the 1990s, until local schools began teaching it to preserve the tradition.
