Snow Monks?

Frozen spikes that form at high altitudes where snow is deep and sunlight is strong are called penitent snow or ice. Said to resemble rows of penitents, or monks, each one points toward the noonday sun. They look delicate but can be strong enough to block a hiker’s path. (Varsescu / iStock)
