SOS for Distress

Officially adopted in 1908, the universal distress signal “SOS” doesn’t stand for “save our ship,” “save our souls,” or any other phrase. The letters were chosen because they form an easy-to-recognize pattern in Morse code: three dots, three dashes, three dots.
