The ancient library of Celsus housed up to 15,000 scrolls — and the tomb of the book-loving Roman official for which it is named. Completed around 135 A.D. in what is now Turkey, it featured carvings describing Celsus’s life, as well as specially designed niches to protect manuscripts. (Muratart / Shutterstock)
