Spiky Ice Cubes

Ever seen spikes on ice cubes? They develop as the cubes freeze. Here’s how: If there’s a small hole on the top surface of a freezing cube, the still-cooling water below may expand and slowly push up through it. The rising water grows into a spike, which eventually freezes solid.
