The First First Lady

President Zachary Taylor coined the term “First Lady” at the 1849 funeral of Dolley Madison, wife of fourth President James Madison. A decade later, the title was applied to Harriet Lane, the niece who ran President James Buchanan’s White House — and it stuck.
