The Tale Behind The Tempest

A real-life disaster inspired William Shakespeare’s classic play The Tempest. In 1609, English colonists sailing to Virginia were shipwrecked by a hurricane. One of the survivors, William Strachey, described the ordeal in a letter that was widely read in England.
