Tropical Permafrost

by Kids Discover

Patches of frozen ground, or permafrost, exist atop the Mauna Kea volcano on the generally warm island of Hawaii. You’ll also find ice caves on the sides of nearby Mauna Loa. These rare microclimates are similar to those in parts of Mars where icy patches form in relatively warm places. (Alexey Kamenskiy / Shutterstock)
