Merry Christmas! The Brazilian town of Natal, which is Portuguese for “Christmas,” was founded on December 25, 1599. It’s now the capital of the Rio Grande do Norte state, and each December the city hosts a huge “micareta,” or off-season Carnival, called the Carnatal.
