Artificial skin was invented by surgeon Dr. John Burke and mechanical engineer Ioannis V. Yannas as a treatment for burn victims. A blend of cow tissue and shark cartilage in the bottom layer helps grow new skin cells, while the silicone top layer protects against infection.
