Why Blood Is Red

Red blood cells get their color from hemoglobin, a bright red protein containing iron. Hemoglobin picks up oxygen in your lungs, then releases it to cells as blood circulates. When blood is exposed to air, the hemoglobin absorbs a lot of oxygen, turning it a deep red.
