Why Natural Gas Smells

On its own, natural gas has no odor — but breathing too much of it can be fatal. To help people detect gas leaks quickly, gas companies add a tiny amount of a harmless chemical called mercaptan, which contains sulfur, to give natural gas that familiar “rotten egg” smell.
