From Queen Mary – who started her reign when she was one week old – to the Sultan of Brunei, a modern day king who lives in a $500 million palace, this issue explores the myths and reality of the monarchy, for kids. They’ll start with an overview of European royalty, including some of the most famous monarchs, like Catherine the Great and William the Conqueror, and then focus in on Elizabeth I, who helmed the “Golden Age” in England, which lasted from 1558-1603.
Then kids will read about the history of monarchy and rulers in the rest of the world, including the powerful and long-lasting dynasties of Egypt and China, as well as the tyrannical reign of Attila the Hun, Genghis Khan, and Mansa Musa of Mali. Next, they’ll explore how the riches of monarchs and emperors have been used to build magnificent palaces, like the Forbidden City, as well as monumental tombs, like the Pyramids and the Taj Mahal. Also covered are the various ways that kings and queens have enforced their rule over time, which has sometimes meant changing the law – and sometimes meant putting themselves above it. Finally, kids will get a glimpse of the kings and queens of today, such as Queen Elizabeth of Britain and Naruhito, the crown prince of Japan and heir to the world’s oldest monarchy. For kids bedazzled by the royal way of life, this issue will put stars in their eyes.
