The empty brown skin is actually the dragonfly’s exoskeleton, which is rigid, and retains much of its shape—head, body, legs, and all—even after the dragonfly breaks out. As preparation for its first flight, the dragonfly will pump fluid into the veins of its wings to expand them. (Matt Cole/ Shutterstock)
