That’s a rhyme to get you ready for the birthday of Dr. Seuss and Read Across America Day
happening on March 2 to celebrate the magic of books.
Dr. Seuss Day shares the book party with Read Across America Day, established by the National Education Association (NEA) in 1998. These occasions are a celebration of reading as an activity to enjoy and share with families and young readers.
To help kick off the festivities, parents with children born on March 2, 2024, can visit SeussPledge.com to register and get a free book.
This year, Dr. Seuss Enterprises wants to help build your library by adding another picture book to the shelf. They are sending a personalized copy of The Cat in the Hat to any reader who shares Dr. Seuss’s birthday, which is March 2 (up to 20,000 books).
Head on over to SeussPledge.com to register. Get ready to sign up and also stay updated on the celebration activities at the official Dr. Seuss Instagram.) Are you lucky enough to already have a copy of this Seuss classic for kids? Pay it forward with a chance to have a copy donated to an underserved community.
According to the rules posted on the website, parents or legal guardians of excited readers have 90 days to claim their child’s free book on a first-come first-serve basis. Each book contains a personalized message that “commemorates the child’s Seussian birthday,” Dr. Seuss Enterprises said in a release, and “encourages parents to read to their child every day.”
Dr. Seuss Enterprises has also made free resources available for teachers, parents and caregivers to explore the world of Seuss characters and rhymes with resources that can be found at Seussville.com.
“It’s always a good time to add another Dr. Seuss title to the collection,” says Marisa LaScala, Parenting Editor at Good Housekeeping. “His books are great because they really play around with language — it helps children understand the relationships between letters and sounds when they read his rhymes or figure out how to say his nonsense words. More importantly, they’re also really fun to read, especially if you can challenge each other to read them out loud.”
Read about how Dr. Seuss stories were made into a colorful Broadway musical with a Kids Discover Read Aloud from last year with Janine LaManna who starred as the original Gertrude McFuzz with her determined spirit and one-feathered tail.
