Kids Discover Talks with Book Editor Karen Cicero about Good Housekeeping’s 2025 Kids’ Book Awards

Cookies are baking, presents are under the tree and we are talking about great books that came our way in 2025 with Good Housekeeping Book Editor, Karen Cicero, as she shares her thoughts on what had us reading and talking about book titles this past year.

A team of 125 children ages 0-12 and their families reviewed books suggested by librarians, publishers, and the Good Housekeeping editors. The list included books that made readers think about life as a kid, see problems and solutions in a new way, get lost in magical adventures and laugh out loud.

Karen tells Kids Discover that this year one title made both the kids and the adults chuckle as they turned the pages of a book about a group of animals in the water who are not to be trusted. Fish are funny!

“We found a gem that both librarians and kids fell hard for—and it was in the most unlikely category of all: a fiction/non-fiction blend”

Award judge and librarian Elizabeth Bird brought Don’t Trust Fish by Neil Sharpson and Dan Santat to the attention of the Good Housekeeping Book discussions and said, “Without a doubt, it’s the funniest picture book of the year.” Readers agreed and put this fabulous fish tale at the top of the list of must-reads for this year.

“Interactivity also plays a role in the book experience this year with some book selections,” says Karen.

“Just by saying, “Alexa, open Ready Activated!” there are so many story possibilities and learning of facts that can happen now. Alexa can take part in the process with helping create story elements and getting interactive with non-fiction topics like dinosaurs!”
