Your Voice Matters!
What does it mean to be able to vote?
One of our most powerful actions we have as an American citizen is our right to vote. When we vote in elections we are using our ability to make a choice for officials to fill government positions. This process is part of our democracy.
A democracy is a system of government in which laws, policies, leadership, and important decisions are decided by the “people.” The right to vote in a democracy is one that some groups of citizens have fought for with protests and marches.
According to the Library of Congress, the framers of our Constitution left details of voting to individual states and this became a problem for keeping voting practices fair for everyone. Women, African Americans, Native Americans and young adult citizens had to fight for the right to vote in elections in the United States.
Kids can’t officially go cast a ballot in an election yet but they can talk about it with family and friends!
This month we want to have conversations about what is happening with the candidates, the Presidential election and the issues that are important to people. The people we vote for will make decisions that affect our everyday lives, our families, our schools, and what happens in our communities.
Kids have a lot to say and have great ideas to share about important issues. Nickelodeon wants kids’ voices to be heard this election season!
You can get the conversation started with the return of its Kids Pick the President “Kids’ Vote” poll and a brand-new special debuting Monday, Oct. 28. For the next few weeks of October, kids can cast their vote for who they want to be the next president at kidspickthepresident.com.
NICKELODEON LETS KIDS’ VOICES BE HEARD THIS ELECTION SEASON WITH THE RETURN OF KIDS PICK THE PRESIDENT “KIDS’ VOTE” POLL AND BRAND-NEW SPECIAL
The results of the poll will be revealed during the half-hour special, hosted by Nate Burleson (CBS Mornings, NFL Slimetime, The NFL Today) and his 14-year-old daughter, Mia Burleson (NFL Slimetime). The Kids Pick the President “Kids’ Vote” is an informal non-scientific poll, meant for entertainment purposes only.
The Kids Pick the President special will premiere Monday, Oct. 28, at 8 p.m. (ET/PT), on Nickelodeon and be available day and date on Paramount+, Nickelodeon YouTube, Nick.com and the Nickelodeon Pluto TV channels (Nick Pluto, 90’s Kids TV, Totally Teen). The special will also be available the following day on Nick On Demand.
When you cast your vote for President you can then download an “I Voted” badge to show you did your part in the process.
Have discussions with family and friends about your thoughts and opinions and ask people what they think about the candidates and the issues. Maybe there are adults in your life who would like to hear from you about topics they don’t completely understand like technology, social media or what concerns you about your school.
We can all learn from each other!
We have more information happening this month at Kids Discover to keep us informed and talking about what matters to us as we choose a new President of the United States!
