With the year whizzing by, we are finally at the last month of 2023. Together, let’s make the most of the final days before a well-deserved Winter Holiday. Here are 7 Topics throughout the month of December to keep your students discovering! 

December 1 – Rosa Parks Day

On this day in 1955, one woman’s small act would change the course of our country’s history. Rosa Parks was arrested in Montgomery, Alabama, for refusing to give her seat to a white man. Four days later, the Montgomery Bus Boycott began. In our Rosa Parks Unit, you will be able to learn more about the events leading up to the boycott and the aftermath. 

December 3 – First Human Heart Transplant (1967)

Just over 50 years ago, the world’s first human-to-human heart transplant was conducted in Cape Town, South Africa. At the time, it was the world’s most widely reported medical event and has since led to even greater innovations. Students are never too young to begin learning about Keeping the Heart Healthy. Our Heart Unit gives students an up-close look at the organ that keeps the blood flowing.

December 7 – Anniversary of Pearl Harbor (1941)

Also known as “a day which will live in infamy,” the bombing of Pearl Harbor in Hawaii was the pivotal event that brought the United States into World War II. December 14 – First Explorer to Reach the South Pole

Over 100 years ago, the first team of explorers ventured for one of the farthest corners of the world by reaching the South Pole. Roald Amundson and his team may have been the first, but it has been a destination for research ever since. December 17 – The Wright Brothers’ First Flight

Kitty Hawk, North Carolina took center stage on this day in 1903 when the Wright Brothers had their first flight. Mankind had always dreamed of taking to the skies and now it was finally possible. In our Wright Brothers Unit, you will learn more about where this aviation journey started and where it may take us in the future. 

December 22 – First Gorilla Born in Captivity (1956)

In 1956, history was made with the birth of the first gorilla in captivity, marking a crucial moment for wildlife conservation. This milestone stressed the importance of protecting endangered species. Dive deeper into the world of animal conservation efforts with our Endangered Species Unit, exploring the challenges faced and the vital role humans play in preserving biodiversity.

December 23 – Madam C.J. Walker Is Born (1867)
