These 7 dates and Units provide ready-to-use ideas for wrapping up the year with purpose, energy, and just the right amount of fun.

June 1 – The Start of Hurricane Season

June 1 marks the official start of Hurricane Season in the Atlantic, offering the perfect opportunity to explore how these powerful storms form and impact communities. With Our Hurricanes Unit and How a Hurricane Develops Video, students can examine the science behind hurricane formation, the role of warm ocean waters, and how meteorologists track these storms. It’s a timely topic to introduce discussions around weather safety, climate patterns, and emergency preparedness.

June 6 – Allied Forces Land on Normandy Beaches

On June 6, 1944, Allied forces stormed the beaches of Normandy in one of the most pivotal moments of World War II—D-Day. This historic event is explored in Kids Discover’s World War II Unit, which helps students understand the scale of the war, the reasons behind the Allied invasion, and its impact on the course of history. It’s an opportunity to introduce themes of courage, sacrifice, and global cooperation, while fostering an understanding of the events that shaped the modern world.

June 10 – Benjamin Franklin Conducts Kite Experiment

On this day in 1752, Benjamin Franklin conducted his legendary kite experiment to prove that lightning was a form of electricity. Students can dive into this iconic moment in science history through Kids Discover’s Ben Franklin Unit, which details his life and his many contributions, and our Electricity Unit, which breaks down the basics of electric currents, circuits, and static electricity. This is a great day to spark scientific curiosity through Cross-Curricular lesson planning!

June 10 – Spirit Rover Launches to Mars (2003)

Also on June 10, the Spirit Rover was launched toward Mars as part of NASA’s Mars Exploration Program. Using Kids Discover’s Mars Unit and our Mars Video, students can follow the Spirit Rover’s incredible mission, including the challenges of landing on another planet and what it taught us about the Martian surface. This date is perfect for inspiring future scientists and engineers while discussing space exploration and robotics.

June 19th – Juneteenth

Juneteenth, celebrated on June 19, commemorates the day in 1865 when enslaved people in Texas were finally informed of their freedom—more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed. Kids Discover’s Civil Rights Unit and  Juneteenth Topic provide historical context to this important day, exploring its significance in the broader fight for equality and civil rights. It’s a meaningful time for students to reflect on American history, social justice, and the ongoing journey toward freedom for all.

June 22 – World Rain Forest Day

World Rain Forest Day is celebrated on June 22 to raise awareness about the importance of tropical rainforests and the urgent need to protect them. June 27 – National Sunglasses Day

National Sunglasses Day on June 27 is more than a fun excuse to rock your shades—it’s a great opportunity to explore the science behind sunlight and eye protection. With Kids Discover’s Sun Unit, students can learn about the power and energy of the sun, including ultraviolet (UV) radiation and its effects on Earth. Then, dive into the Eyes Unit to understand how the human eye works, how light impacts vision, and why UV protection is so important for eye health.
