Teaching September 2024

by Kids Discover

As the last days of summer gently fade, September ushers in a season of new beginnings and academic adventures. The energy of back-to-school excitement fills the air, offering a fresh slate for exploring history, science, and beyond with your students. As you start planning, be sure to mark these important dates on your calendar to inspire your lesson plans. Here’s to an educational September!

September 7 – First TV Demonstration (1927)

On September 7, 1928, the world changed when the U.S. inventor Philo Farnsworth’s image dissector camera tube transmitted its first image. Our Inventions Unit and Inventors and Inventions Unit for Grade 3 allows students to explore groundbreaking historical moments. They will understand how key inventions revolutionized communication and entertainment, and be inspired to think about the future of technology.

September 9 – National Teddy Bear Day

The teddy bear, named after President Theodore Roosevelt, originated from a 1902 hunting trip where Roosevelt famously spared a bear cub’s life. This compassionate act inspired a cartoon, and soon after, the iconic toy was born. Our Teddy Roosevelt Unit dives into this story and explores the remarkable life and legacy of our 26th president.

September 11 – The 23rd Anniversary

On September 11th, we honor the lives lost and the bravery of first responders. Kids Discover’s September 11 Unit offers a meaningful way to teach students about this emotional day, focusing on its everlasting significance and the lessons of resilience and community that emerged. It’s a vital tool for helping young minds understand and respect the impact of 9/11.

September 12 – President Kennedy’s “We choose to go to the Moon” Speech (1962)

While speaking to Rice University, President John F. Kennedy gave this speech that sparked the ‘space race’ and our country’s mission to reach the moon by the end of the decade. While he wasn’t able to see that vision fulfilled, it’s still a huge part of his legacy. Combining our units on John F. Kennedy and Space is a great cross-curricular lesson idea, bringing Science and Social Studies together, that your students are sure to enjoy!

September 16 – Mexican Independence Day

Mexican Independence Day is September 16th. On this date, Father Hidalgo started the revolt against the Spanish. He rang the church bells to gather the townspeople. Then he gave a speech that ended with a famous call to revolution known as the Cry of Dolores. Learn about the history and culture of our neighbors to the South with our Unit on Mexico.

September 17 – Constitution Day

On this day in 1787, some of our country’s greatest minds came together to create guidelines for our new nation. In our Constitution Unit, we take your students through the entire process, from the Constitutional Convention to more recent amendments. Continue the conversation about our country’s government by sharing the How America Works Unit. This is a perfect primer to get ready for the Presidential Election!

September 29 – World Heart Day

On World Heart Day, we focus on the health of the heart, the engine of our bodies. The Heart Unit, particularly How the Heart Works, provides a comprehensive look at how the heart functions and what we can do to keep it healthy. It’s an invaluable tool for teaching students about the importance of heart health and wellness.
