Here are some familiar situations we can use to provide students with an excellent framework for understanding and applying cybersecurity principles. 

Protecting Online Gaming Accounts

Online games such as Pokemon Go are popular among students, but they come with various cybersecurity risks. Common threats include credential stuffing, where hackers use stolen usernames and passwords from other sites to gain access, and phishing attempts disguised as in-game rewards or official communications. 

To safeguard their accounts, teach students how to use unique, strong passwords for each gaming platform and to be wary of clicking on links or downloading files from unknown sources. Additionally, teach students to be cautious about sharing personal information on online gaming platforms. 

Securing Social Media Profiles

Like online gaming, social media platforms are integral to students’ social lives, but they can also be goldmines for cybercriminals. Creating strong passwords is a crucial first step in securing these accounts. 

Encourage students to use a combination of uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers, and symbols while avoiding easy-to-guess information like birth dates or pet names. Additionally, explain the importance of using two-factor authentication to add an extra layer of security.

Understanding and adequately configuring privacy settings is equally important. Urge students to regularly review these settings to control who can see their posts and personal information. They should be mindful of the information they share publicly, as this data can be used for social engineering attacks or identity theft.

Smartphone and App Security

Smartphones hold a lot of personal information, yet they are highly vulnerable to cyber threats. Help students understand why they should lock their devices using strong passcodes or biometric authentication and keep their operating systems and apps updated to patch security vulnerabilities. 

Additionally, make it clear why it’s important to download apps from official app stores and check reviews and permissions before installing. To deepen students’ understanding of app security, you can even get into practical lessons, especially for older kids. For instance, show them firsthand how to pentest a common web app, like a personal blog or a mobile game. This hands-on approach helps students understand the vulnerabilities that can exist in the apps they use daily, reinforcing the importance of careful app selection and regular updates.

Students should also be made aware of the risks associated with public Wi-Fi networks. Encourage them to use VPNs when connecting to public Wi-Fi to protect their data from potential eavesdroppers. Additionally, they should be cautious about what information they access or transmit while on public networks.

Safe Online Communication

In an age of constant digital communication, recognizing and avoiding common scams and phishing attempts is a critical skill. Students should be wary of unsolicited messages, especially those creating a sense of urgency or asking for personal information. 

They should verify the sender’s identity before clicking on links or downloading attachments, even if the message appears to come from a friend or trusted organization.

The importance of verifying sources before sharing personal information cannot be overstated. Remind students to always double-check the legitimacy of websites before entering sensitive data, look for secure HTTPS connections, and be cautious of sites that seem too good to be true. 

They should also be mindful of the information they share in online forms or surveys and consider whether the request is necessary and legitimate.

Security on AI Platforms 

From chatbots like ChatGPT to smart cameras and photo apps, students use AI technology daily, so it’s crucial for them to understand how to keep themselves safe on these platforms. 

One way to do this is to discuss what’s actually behind AI – countless data centers with GPU server hosting clusters, all of which hum with the purpose of training models by OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic. Don’t hesitate to mention how much water and energy they guzzle daily either, as the issue is only going to get more prominent.  

These data centers not only power AI but also store vast amounts of data, making them potential targets for cyberattacks. Helping students understand how to secure their personal data on these systems is becoming increasingly important.

Interactive Cybersecurity Activities for Students

Engaging students in hands-on activities is an effective way to reinforce cybersecurity concepts and develop practical skills. Here are some activities that can bring cybersecurity to life in the classroom or at home.

Simple Encryption Activities

Encryption is a fundamental concept in cybersecurity that plays a crucial role in protecting sensitive data from unauthorized access. To introduce students to this concept and demonstrate encryption basics, we can use hands-on activities that involve creating a simple substitution cipher. Here’s a good example:

  • Have students create their own alphabet key by randomly assigning each letter to a different symbol or number.
  • Ask them to write a short message and then “encrypt” it using their key.
  • Students can then exchange their encrypted messages and keys with a partner to practice “decrypting” the information.

Such an activity teaches students how to think like innovators, helps them understand the principles of encryption and decryption tangibly, and highlights the importance of keeping encryption keys secure.

Cyber Hygiene Challenges

Developing good digital habits is essential for maintaining cybersecurity. Setting up weekly challenges can encourage students to practice these habits regularly. 

Challenges can include tasks such as regularly updating passwords, checking and adjusting privacy settings on social media accounts, and ensuring that software and applications are up to date. 

Online Safety Quizzes

Quizzes can be an effective tool for reinforcing cybersecurity knowledge and identifying areas where students may need additional support. These quizzes can cover a range of topics, from identifying phishing attempts and recognizing safe online practices to understanding the importance of strong passwords.

After completing a quiz, provide students with feedback about their performance and specific resources tailored to the areas they need to improve.
