Deep-Down Rescue

by Kids Discover

The first successful rescue of U.S. submariners came in 1939, after the USS Squalus sank during a test dive off the New England coast. The Navy extracted 33 survivors (26 people died) by using the brand-new McCann Rescue Chamber, a steel capsule that seals onto a sub’s escape hatch.
