Phototropism: Grow Toward the Light

Most plants grow toward a light source, meaning they are phototropic. The hormone auxin prompts plants to reach for light, a process known as positive phototropism. Negative phototropism is the opposite: Roots grow into the soil, away from light, to find water and nutrients.
